Lake Erie Metropark Hawk Watch Trip: October 11, 2020 10am-2pm
This year’s hawk migration field trip will again be led by Steve Lauer and will be at the famous Detroit River Hawk Watch. This year’s trip will be three weeks later than recent years as we try for variety this year instead of hoping for a big Broad-winged Hawk day. With ideal weather conditions, 16 species are possible during October. We will be at the end of the Broad-winged Hawk migration, the peak of the Turkey Vulture migration and early in the Goshawk, Golden Eagle and Rough-legged Hawk migration. Other possible raptor species include Osprey, Bald Eagle, Merlin, American Kestrel, Peregrine, Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned Hawk, Cooper’s Hawk, Red-shouldered Hawk, Red-tailed Hawk and maybe even a rare Swainson’s Hawk! We should also see migrating passerines and insects.
The hawk watch is at Lake Erie Metropark, 32481 W. Jefferson, Brownstown, MI 48173. There is a $10 per car usage fee. After entering the park follow signs to the boat launch and look for the TNA sign.
Per TNA Covid-19 policy the trip is limited to 10 participants, masks are required and social distancing will be practiced. The hawk watch is in an open area so distancing from other hawk watchers should not be an issue. The official counters are in a fenced in area. Please contact Jim Witter or Steve Lauer to register for the field trip. We look forward to seeing you on October 11!
