Native Plants in the Yard

After educating folks about the value of native plants professionally, I decided to take the plunge personally and convert parts of the yard to native plants. Learn about the successes, failures and stories of gardening in an urban environment. We’ll also discuss how to get plants and how to connect with the gardening community in NW Ohio.

Our Speaker: Jim Witter, Program Coordinator at the Wood County Parks
In second grade, a report on the belted kingfisher sparked my interest in birds, and I have been hooked on exploring our wild places ever since. I remember writing a journal entry in 5th grade stating that I wanted to be a naturalist, and I am excited to be living the dream! I graduated from the College of Wooster with a B.A. in biology in 2007 and jumped into internships in environmental education with Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center at Penn State and Glen Helen Ecological Institute in Yellow Springs, Ohio. I’ve also previously worked at the Toledo Zoo, Toledo Metroparks, and Ohio Division of Wildlife. I have been working at the Wood County Park District for 12 years, the last 9 as the program coordinator. Besides my interest in natural resources, I enjoy playing and following sports, singing with Masterworks Chorale, cooking, and spending time with friends and family.
