Botany and Birds

Please join former Oak Openings Metropark manager and Rare Plant monitor, Jerry Jankowski, and UT professor emeritus and “Richness and Rarity” author, Elliot Tramer, for a walk in Oak Openings Metropark. PLEASE REGISTER BELOW.

Together, all will search for those late bloomers and find out what happens to some of those Oak Openings specialists out on the dunes. Bird migration will also be in full swing at this time and a variety of migrating warblers such as the Blackpoll, Black-throated Green, and Yellow-rumped Warblers are possible, as well as the northern migrant that escaping slaves prayed to hear, the White-throated Sparrow, singing “Oh, Canada, Canada, Canada”. These two leaders will guide participants on a morning walk on trails in the southern part of the park.

Please park along South Wilkens Road (off Rte. 64 between Rte 295 and Jeffers Rd) at the Oak Openings Metropark gate at 10:00 am. Come prepared for any weather and possibly mosquitos (though these populations have been minimal this year due to the dry weather).
